Work Based Learning

 This programme aims to improve opportunities for Apprentices and other work-based learners to progress to vocational higher education by:
  • Researching and mapping progression routes and Foundation Degrees
  • Establishing routes into Higher Education using the new qualifications framework
  • Developing bridging curriculum with companies, colleges and training providers
  • Promoting the work-based route to young employees and students

This work is managed by Staffordshire University on behalf of the partnership.  They will collaborate with local Colleges, Training Providers and schools to deliver activities that include presentations, taster experiences and short work-based courses.

Progression through Work-based Learning

Partners: 
Staffordshire University (lead institution), Shrewsbury College of Arts and Technology (SCAT), Telford College of Arts and Technology (TCAT). HEIs: Open University, Staffordshire University, University of Wolverhampton, University of Birmingham, Harper Adams University College, North East Wales Institute of Higher Education (NEWI). Learning Partnerships: Shropshire, Telford and Wrekin; Connexions STW, Shropshire LSC and Shropshire County Training.

Aims:
To establish clear local progression routes, from schools and further education colleges into higher education and improving routes into higher education for modern apprentices and other work-based learners. The programme aims to map local progression routes, build vocational curriculum in collaboration with companies, colleges and training providers and promote the work-based route to students, parents and teachers via taster sessions.

Outcomes:
These will include:

  • Information on progression routes
  • Qualification routes and publicity designed to encourage the participation in higher education of learners in the workplace
  • Increased enquiries and take-up of vocational routes and entry into higher education via work-based routes.

Activities:
These will include:

  • A map of local progression routes to higher education (including Foundation Degrees)
  • 1,000 leaflets on progression routes produced and distributed to target groups
  • Bridging curriculum designed at regional level and implemented locally
  • Year 10/11 pupils informed about work-based routes to Higher Education through presentations
  • 30 Advanced Apprentices informed about further education opportunities through information, advice and guidance and HE taster sessions
  • 100 Advanced Apprentices to receive subject specific information and guidance through progression events
  • Teachers and guidance staff to receive up-to-date information on work-based learning routes through to H.E.
