UniFest

Welcome to UniFest!

UniFest is the new name for University Summer Schools in the West Midlands. It is a FREE opportunity for you to see what student life is like at one of 15 universities and colleges across the West Midlands. At a UniFest event you will get to meet university students and staff, make new friends and have an action packed, fun experience. As well as helping you decide whether or not to go to university, it could be the best thing you will do all summer!

What will I do?

That depends on which university and event you choose. As the name suggests, UniFest is a festival of university life and learning, and with 15 universities and colleges and 28 events you have a lot to choose from. Reading the UniFest directory will show you that that UniFest events vary in length, from 1 day to 6 days, and that most are residential. Events can take place in term-time or during the summer holiday. Some give you the chance to explore a range of subjects and courses, and others focus in on certain career or study options. Some are for young people in a single Year Group and others are for mixed age-groups. But all UniFest events will show you what university life is like, and give you the chance to develop your skills and self confidence.

Who is UniFest for?

If you attend a state school or college and are thinking about university, but need extra help to make the right decisions about your future, then UniFest could be the answer. To apply to UniFest you should be able to answer “Yes” to at least one of the following*:

●My parents or carers did not go to university / higher education (HE)
●My parents or carers have semiskilled or manual jobs
● I have a disability
● I have a learning difficulty
● I am in the care of my local authority (or I am leaving the care system)

Your teacher or college lecturer will need to agree to your application, and if you are under 18 your parents/carers will also need to agree for you to take part.

Result! (April)

If you are offered a place you will receive a letter giving you the good news in late April. The letter will tell you which of your 4 choices you are going to, and give you the contact details of the university or college staff planning your visit. Make sure you tell your parents / carers and your teacher or lecturer straight away, so that they do not plan anything that clashes with your UniFest experience!

Get Ready... (May to July)

Between being offered a place and going on your UniFest event you will be contacted by the university you are to visit. They will need to know more about you, and any special arrangements they need to
make to look after you during your stay. Many universities hold applicant evenings for young people and parents, or visit schools and colleges to meet applicants and their parents.
